What this page leaves out, and how much to trust it
Chosen for influence, not merit or fame. Some entries are admirable,
some are monstrous, several are foreigners, and a few mattered mainly
because of what was done to them. The list runs to 218 rather than 200
because the 1953 coup, the 1979 revolution and the war of 2025 to 2026
each need multiple people to be intelligible at all.
Deliberately absent are the institutions that arguably outweigh most
individuals here: the Qom seminary, the bazaar merchant class, the
Tudeh Party, SAVAK, the IRGC and its economic conglomerates, the
Basij, the bonyads, Anglo-Iranian and BP, and above all oil itself.
Absent too are the millions of anonymous participants: the Tabriz
fighters of 1908, the strikers who shut the oil industry in 1978, the
child soldiers of the 1980s, and the protesters of 2009, 2017, 2019,
2022 and 2025 to 2026. A list of named individuals silently claims
that history is made by named individuals. It is not.
Everything here was drafted from general knowledge and is not yet
checked against sources. Events since early 2025 are still unfolding
and contested. Casualty figures from the 2026 crackdown range from
roughly 6,500 to well over 12,000 depending on the source. This page
shows the range because no single number is yet defensible.
